In the century of lights, the philosopher Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), an expressive advocate of utilitarianism, debated the maximization of utility and happiness for a people. In turn, the influences of Enlightenment utilitarian ideas promoted that the pursuit of happiness becomes an established article within the American constitution, such was its importance in society. Today, scientists have even created a science known as hedonic to debate about the pursuit of modern happiness and its obstacles. After all, what makes individuals or entire populations happy in the world today?
In this sense, the king of Bhutan Jigme Singye Wangchuck created the term Gross National Happiness that would later become an index to evaluate the happiness of a nation, but which is still much debated by scholars and the target of some criticism.
